The history of the Hermannsburg Mission in Central Australia and Hermannsburg, Germany. Produced by Southern Cross TV Productions. Shown on German Television (ARD). All original materials (Negatives and sound tapes included) were donated to SCREENSOUND Australia. . 1986: “Herausforderungen: Die Deutschen in Australien“ (Challenges- The Germans in Australia) 45 min. 16 mm. Camera: Keith Bushnell An extended Australian version – one hour – was made for SBS Television in 1987. Title: “The Germans in Australia”. Contents: The changing fortunes of German migrants in Australia from the First Fleet until today. Sections of this film are on the “Australian Screen“ web site. The link above will take directly to it. 1985: “Bergen-Belsen, for example” 1 hr. 16 mm. A co-production of Southern Cross TV Productions, Chronos-Film Berlin and the Landeszentrale fuer politische Bildung in Hannover. Author, director and producer. Camera: Keith Bushnell The film shows the liberation of the Bergen Belsen concentration camp from an Australian angle, twice removed by distance and time (40 years later). All witnesses filmed in Australia, e.g. survivors, one of the soldiers who first entered the camp (Arthur Bushnell) and cameraman Mike Lewis, who shot the historical footage of the liberation and now lived in Canberra. The film contains about 10 min stock footage, copyright Imperial War Museum, London. Apart from this, all international rights to the documentary (but for German speaking countries) are owned by Southern Cross Television. This film was shown on German Television (ARD) and the English language version can be viewed at the Belsen Memorial. It includes an evaluation by Simone Veil, President of the European Parliament and a survivor of Bergen-Belsen. It was also shown at the Jewish Holocaust Conference in Sydney in 1986. Segments of the film are on the “Australian Screen” web site, the link above will take directly to it. Work on a shortened and updated version was concluded in 1995. This Version, 23 min. is shown every hour to visitors of the Bergen-Belsen Memorial. near Celle, Germany. In English, German, French and Spanish. Its title is identical. | back to top | B: Documentaries made for German TV: 1986: “Lower Saxonia 1945”, English language version of my documentary on the end of the war in Germany, 45 min. Author, director. Produced by Chronos Film Berlin and the State of Lower Saxonia. The English version was requested by the British Army for training purposes in that area. . 1985: “Ein Haus der Macht”. 45 min. A film on the history of the infamous IG-Farbenindustrie and its headquarters in Fankfurt. Director and co-author. Contains film clips from Bernd Sinkel’s trilogy “Fathers and sons” and an interview with Bernd Sinkel. IG Farben ran the Auschwitz concentration camp and supplied the poison for the gas chambers. Interview with a Jewish survivor and the managers of the “IG Farbenindustrie in liquidation”, who state that business relations with US firms were kept up right to the end of WWII. Filmed at the IG Farben building, which was now the US army headquarters. Produced by and for Hessischer Rundfunk Fernsehen in Frankfurt and shown (though only once) on the First network of German television (ARD) . 1984: “Wer war Walter Rathenau? (Who was Walter Rathenau?) 45 min. A tribute to the German Foreign Minister and philosopher murdered by nationalist fanatics in 1923. Author and director. As only 18 seconds of original footage on him exist, research carries the story.
